Top Tips for Travelling to the Maldives with Small Kids
The perfect post-Christmas paradise
Way back in 2022, I was six months pregnant with my second child when we found out that both my husband and I were going to be working on Christmas Day. After a very timely chat with a savvy friend, who casually mentioned that there were loads of British Airways companion flights to the Maldives available on AVIOS, the seed of an idea was planted.
Cut to two weeks later: all four of us were boarding a flight to the Maldives, flying business class for the price of one economy ticket. If you’re not already on the AVIOS train, let me tell you, get on it!
Not just for honeymoons
Flights aside, we touched down in the Maldives and had the most incredible week. It was exactly what we needed, especially with the lingering sting of working over Christmas: sunshine, sea, and time together. Our two-year-old was in absolute heaven splashing in the lagoon, and I was just grateful for the downtime before baby number two arrived.
The Maldives might be best known as the ultimate honeymoon destination, but it is also an amazing place for families with little ones. Think calm lagoons, white sand beaches, and luxury resorts that really know how to keep kids happy while parents actually get to relax.
That said, travelling to a remote island paradise does come with its quirks, and we definitely learned a few lessons the hard way. Here are my top tips to make your Maldives trip with kids run smoothly…
Pack smart!
This one sounds obvious, but it’s easy to forget. The Maldives isn’t like going to Spain where you can just wander to the nearest supermarket. Most resorts are on private islands, and the on-site shops usually only stock essentials like sun cream and after sun.
Tip: Don’t assume you’ll be able to buy things like beach toys, armbands, or kids’ swimming gear once you arrive. Pack everything you think you’ll need for the week, because once you’re there, you really are on your own little island.
2. Factor in the Cost (and Fun) of the Seaplane
Most islands can only be reached by seaplane transfer. They’re incredible, the views are jaw-dropping, and even my husband (who’s a pilot) was impressed, but they do come at a price. Transfers cost around $400 per adult return, and while sometimes included in a package, they often aren’t.
It’s also worth noting that seaplanes can be bumpy. If you’ve got kids (or adults) who get travel sick, you might prefer a resort accessible by speedboat, although a choppy boat ride isn’t always better.
Tip: Check in advance which option works best for your family before you book.
3. Don’t Overpack - Luggage Allowance Is Tight
If you do end up flying by seaplane, your luggage allowance will usually be 20kg per person. Double-check before you go. The good news is, you won’t need much. Days are all about swimsuits, beach cover-ups, and something light for dinner in the evening. I lived in a rotation of swimwear, sarongs, and flip-flops.
It’s the perfect excuse to pack light.
4. It’s Not Just for Honeymooners
One of the biggest myths about the Maldives is that it’s only for couples. That couldn’t be further from the truth. We were surrounded by families, and most resorts cater brilliantly for children. Think kids’ clubs, children’s pools, babysitting services, and family-friendly dining options.
Tip: I did a lot of research into which resorts were best for families before booking, and it really paid off. If you’d like recommendations, I’d be more than happy to share the ones that ticked all the boxes for us.
5. Location Matters
Resorts often span the entire island, and that can mean long walks or shuttle rides to get from your villa to the pool, the beach, or the restaurants. With little kids, that can quickly turn into a mission.
Tip: When booking, think about what will matter most to your family - whether that’s being close to the main pool, the dining areas, or right on the beach. When you book with me, I can liaise with the hotel directly to request the best room location for your needs.
